Arts and culture in Dundee & Angus

Begin your journey through the arts at the impressive McManus Galleries, housed in a Gothic Revival-style building and recently restored to its full glory. Open since 1867, this building houses stunning paintings and artefacts which show the story of Dundee through the ages and the city’s amazing collection of works.

Have a go at creating your own masterpiece at the city’s stunning arts centre and exhibition space, Dundee Contemporary Arts. The centre houses its own print studio so you can join amateur and professional artists to make your own art or sign up for a workshop. This amazing art centre also shows films, runs exhibitions and has a stylish café.

Whether your musical preferences lean towards pop or classical, the Caird Hall showcases a versatile range of concerts throughout the year and past performances have included Frank Sinatra and David Bowie.

Another of the city’s famous venues is the Dundee Rep Theatre, home to Scotland’s only full-time dramatic company which boasts a year-round programme of drama, dance, comedy and music. You’ll find more entertaining performances at Arbroath’s two venues, the Abbey Theatre and the Webster Theatre.

Admire more art in the heart of Forfar’s historic town centre, at the Meffan Museum and Art Gallery. Wander through two galleries filled with ever-changing exhibitions of work by contemporary Scottish artists and discover the story of the Angus town, back to Pictish times.

Look out for the latest addition to the long list of art venues in Dundee - the Victoria & Albert Museum. Planned to be opened in 2015, this international centre of design for Scotland will celebrate Scotland’s historic importance in design by hosting major international touring exhibitions of outstanding design, promoting the emerging creative talents and helping people understand their own and others’ cultural heritage.

The V & A Dundee will be on the city’s waterfront and will focus on the fashion, architecture, product design, graphic arts and photography and other forms of arts, and will develop opportunities for diverse communities to engage with, learn from and enjoy design creativity, past and present.
