Disney•Pixar’s latest animation captures the musical traditions of the Highlands, with a unique sound provided by its Scottish composer and tracks from a celebrated Gaelic singer.
Brave’s soundtrack will evoke the sound of Scotland, thanks to the contributions of its South Lanarkshire-born composer Patrick Doyle and two original songs from Gaelic performer Julie Fowlis. The Oscar®-nominated composer has scored such acclaimed Hollywood fare as crime classics Carlito’s Way and Donnie Brasco, while also working on lighter British hits, including Bridget Jones’ Diary and Calendar Girls. No stranger to scale, having worked on global smash Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Doyle has taken Brave’s musical inspiration from traditional Scottish instruments.
Merida’s mythical adventure will be brought to life with bagpipes, fiddles, flutes and Celtic harps, as the flamed-haired archer faces her fate. Filmgoers can also expect Gaelic psalm singing, which Doyle has recorded for Pixar’s new film.
Continuing on the Gaelic-influenced theme, Scottish folk-singing sensation Julie Fowlis also lends her voice for the enchanting Highlands animation. Born in North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Fowlis has enjoyed a glittering career with her last two solo albums garnering her worldwide acclaim.
In Brave, she contributes two pieces entitled ‘Touch the Sky’ and 'Into the Open Air'. With her ethereal, captivating presence Julie Fowlis brings the musical spirit of the Western Isles to Brave, ensuring the action is as authentic to Scottish tradition as possible.
Teen piano-playing prodigy Birdy also performs Brave’s epilogue song, entitled 'Learn Me Right'. Born in Hampshire, the 16-year-old is of part Scottish ancestry. The track was written by Grammy-nominated folk group Mumford & Sons.
The Brave soundtrack will be available on CD and as a digital download from 13 August, following on from the film’s European premiere at The Edinburgh International Film Festival on 30 June. You can find the full Brave tracklist below.
