Scotland's gardens and  Year of Creative Scotland 2012 spotlight this month highlights the beauty and diversity of Scotland’s gardens.

From sculptures and lovingly tended blooms, to mazes and even Beatrix Potter characters, come and explore Scotland’s fantastic range of gardens and estates.

Art in the great outdoors

  • Wander through the stunning Jupiter Artland, a hidden gem on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The grounds of Bonnington House have been transformed into a sculptured garden with many specially commissioned pieces, including works by leading artists Antony Gormley, Andy Goldsworthy and Jim Lambie. There’s no specific path to follow, so just create your own trail by strolling through the beautiful grounds at your own pace.
  • Little Sparta in South Lanarkshire boasts over 270 artworks displayed in themes that range from Roman to wild and woodlands gardens. The garden is the creation of artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay, and is said to have been an inspiration for Jupiter Artland. Explore the ‘garden poems’, which combine poetry, sculpture and horticulture, across the five acre site.

  • The summer months are the best time to take a peek behind the walls of Scotland’s many private gardens. Members of Scotland’s Gardens Scheme open their gates to the public throughout the summer when you can admire manicured lawns, lush blooms and exotic plants brought here by generations of globe-trotting Scots.

  • Lose yourself in one of Scotland’s brilliant hedge mazes and spend time finding the right path through them. Try the brilliant Murray Star Maze in Scone Palace gardens in Perthshire, admire the maze and gardens at the Dunskey estate in Dumfries & Galloway, or see if you can beat the maze at Traquair House in the Scottish Borders. 
  • Celebrate the much loved characters of Peter Rabbit and Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail in the Beatrix Potter Garden in Birnam, Perthshire. Explore the beautifully landscaped gardens and spot your favourite characters, recreated in bronze.
