Wherever you end up eating, a wonderful way of finishing off an exquisite meal is with a dram of Highland malt whisky or a local ale. Or why not find out more about how these wonderful drinks are produced with a behind the scenes tour of Highlands distillery or brewery?

Whisky

Scotland's national drink plays an important part in the food and drink of the Highlands, with no fewer than 20 distilleries producing a range of distinctive malts and blends. There's the Malt Whisky Trail which should not be missed and several specialist whisky shops which boast impressive collections of Scotland's national drink. Find out more about whisky in the Highlands.

Beers and ales

It’s not all whisky in the Highlands though. The region is also home to a couple of award-winning breweries who champion craft beer.

The Black Isle Brewery is a small independent brewery in Ross-shire. The barley and hops used are grown on organic farms and the award-winning range of beer includes the delicious Yellowhammer, Champion Beer of Scotland in 2009.

Enjoy refreshing traditional ale with a fresh new edge at Cairngorm Brewery in Aviemore, which has a small shop and offers tours with samples of their ales, or you can try beers from the Atlas Brewery in Kinlochleven or visit the micro-brewery in Glenfinnan.

The Isle of Skye Brewery was established in 1995 and produces ales made from premium quality grains, crushed in their own mill. There is a small shop at the brewery where you can buy the products.

Wine

Look out for the variety of wines produced by Highland Wineries, who operate out of Moniack Castle near Inverness. Although closed to the public, you can still sample the wine, including the renowned Moniack Mead and fruit liqueurs.
