With a bountiful natural larder at its disposal, it’s unsurprising that the cuisine of the Scottish Borders enjoys such a sparkling reputation. From delicious seasonal berries to mouth-watering meats and game, not forgetting excellent seafood, come and experience a true taste of the region.

From the land and sea

The picturesque rural setting of the Scottish Borders makes it easy for local chefs to get their hands on tantalisingly fresh fruit and vegetables from nearby farms and the succulent meat of locally-reared livestock. These very same farms also supply their highly sought after produce to Michelin-starred restaurants across the country.

From tender slices of Cheviot lamb and delicious beef from the Buccleuch estate and Stichill Jerseys, to the delicacies of The Teviot Game Fare Smokery, there is something to suit all tastes.

Or for something a little different, head for the village of Gordon and the Hardiesmill 10 Steak Experience for a fantastic mix of farm tour, butchery demonstration and tasting session.

Discover creamy Stichill cheese which can be enjoyed at the popular Lodge at Carfraemill and savour the taste of traditionally prepared smoked salmon caught off the Berwickshire coast.

The Borders are also famed for mouth-watering berries and during the summer months why not pick your own at fruit farms including Borders Berries in Kelso? Or you can purchase wonderful fruit, as well as an excellent range of local meats, sweets and dairy produce at the monthly farmers’ markets held from Hawick to Kelso. Visit the Borders Food Network for more information about local producers and products across the area.

For a sweet tooth

Indulge in the region’s many sugary delights such as the wonderfully named boiled sweets, Jethhart snails from Jedburgh and Soor Plooms from Galashiels. If you love chocolate, you'll love Cocoa Black in Peebles which has its very own chocolate and pastry school.

The Borders are also famed for the fabulously fruity Selkirk Bannock. Although bannocks can be found in several areas of Scotland and are usually a type of flat bread, the Selkirk variety is more akin to fruit cake. It was said to have been a favourite of Queen Victoria when she visited the region during her reign.

Beers and ales

Sample the unique beers and ales produced in the Scottish Borders, including those produced from one of the UK's oldest breweries in Innerleithen.
