With its gorgeous white sand beaches, wild moors and jagged peaks, the Outer Hebrides is a place of striking contrasts. Journey around the region’s glorious towns and villages and be consistently amazed as you discover the unique character of each one.

Stornoway on Lewis, originally a Viking settlement, is a transport hub and the Outer Hebrides’ biggest town. Connected by regular ferry and air service, the town attracts thousands of visitors each year and offers great accommodation.

While in the town, be sure to try local speciality - the renowned Stornoway black pudding - and look around one of the three Harris Tweed mills on Lewis to learn about the process of making the world-famous textile. Home to many events and festivals including the popular Hebridean Celtic Festival, the monoliths of Calanais Standing Stones are just a short ride away too.

Harris offers a wide range of landscapes with galleries and museums. The island offers outdoor pursuits, stunning scenery and arts and culture. Visit Tarbert, the main town on Harris and ferry port to Uig on Skye.

If you’re into history or are on a castle quest then Castlebay on Barra is the place not to be missed. Discover this once thriving herring port situated on the southern coast of the island and admire its landscape dominated by Kisimul Castle, a seat of Clan MacNeil.

Head to North Uist to explore the charming village of Lochmaddy. Overlooked by picturesque mountains, the town’s main attraction is Taigh Chearsabhagh, a community art centre, which forms part of the Uist Sculpture Trail. The island of Benbecula is greener and flatter with colourful machair, and the main village is Balvanich. On South Uist you can visit Lochboisdale, where the ferry from Oban arrives, Loch Druidibeg, and the lost golf course of Askernish.

Or why not make Eriskay your holiday base? Linked to South Uist by causeway, the island is also a great spot for wildlife watching. Did you know that the island's moors are home to red deer and a rare breed of pony, the Eriskay pony, with only around 400 existing worldwide? The island is also reknowned for the film Whisky Galore and the pub, the Am Policitian, is named after the ship which sunk off its shores loaded with a cargo of whisky.

Whether you’re visiting the Outer Hebrides for the region’s steep history, wonderful natural playground or the rich and widely available arts and culture, wherever you choose to go - you’re guaranteed to come back from your trip rejuvenated, inspired and eager to return.
