Formerly Scotland’s ancient capital, Perth had its civic status reinstated in 2012 to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee making it Scotland’s newest city. Compact and easily accessible on foot, Perth is set on the western banks of the River Tay between two sprawling public parks. Enjoy its eclectic mix of chic boutiques and independent shops, delicious food and drink in excellent restaurants, cafés, bars and pubs, and fascinating historic attractions which include one of the oldest museums in the country.

Venutre beyond the confines of the city to discover delightful towns and villages like the Victorian resort town of Pitlochry with its famous salmon ladder, Aberfeldy located near the Den of Moness and its dramatic waterfall – immortalised in Birks o’ Aberfeldie by Robert Burns – and the tiny village of Birnam where you can visit the Beatrix Potter Exhibition and Garden.

At Kenmore you can see inside an authentically recreated Iron Age dwelling on the shore of Loch Tay at the Scottish Crannog Centre, while further north lies the reputed birthplace of Pontius Pilate, Fortingall. See the Fortingall Yew, an ancient tree believed to be the oldest living thing in Europe.

Explore the neighbouring town of Dunkeld with its carefully restored white-washed houses and 11th century cathedral, and pay visit to the peaceful village of Dunning where you can see the Dupplin Cross, a masterpiece of Pictish masonry.

Don’t miss out Crieff, Comrie and Strathearn where you can explore the rugged landscape of the Highland Boundary Fault, visit whisky distilleries and take a boat out on Loch Earn.

Tee off on the world famous golf resort of Gleneagles and visit the attractive market town of Kinross, the home of Scotland’s biggest music festival T in the Park.
