Nature centres and reserves
The woods, mountains, lochs and coasts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park are rich in wildlife and some of the best places to see it is at the nature reserves and centres within and surrounding the park, including Loch Lomond, Loch Ardinning and Flanders Moss nature reserves. At these at varying times of the year, you'll have an excellent chance to see otters, capercaillie, black grouse, roe and red deer, red squirrels plus many wintering birds including pink-footed and greylag geese.
Another popular draw is The David Marshall Lodge Forest Visitor Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. As well as the magnificent views from the centre, you can alsp enjoy Live CCTV images beamed from different locations within the forest. You may be lucky enough to see buzzards, red Squirrels, peregrine falcons and even the majestic ospreys.
Bird of prey attractions
If you want to enjoy more raptors, why not drive or cycle the Bird of Prey Trail, a 30-mile route taking in many top wildlife-watching areas including Flanders Moss NNR, the Lake of Monteith, The David Marshall Lodge Forest Visitor Centre, Glen Finglass and the Trossachs themselves. The trail highlights plenty of viewing points from where you can see the likes of ospreys, red kites, golden eagles, buzzards, merlins and sparrowhawks in the wild.
Alternatively, the purpose-built hide and live CCTV links at Argaty Red Kites at Lerrocks Farm, Doune, offers great close-up views of these fantastic birds coming down to their daily feed at the feeding station.
Meanwhile, the Loch Lomond Bird Of Prey Centre near Balloch gives its visitors the chance to get up close to some truly impressive raptors including Orla, their magnificent female golden eagle.
Kid-friendly wildlife attractions
While families of all ages will love seeing animals in the wild, two purpose-built attractions here are always a big hit with kids in particular: Blair Drummond Safari & Adventure Park near Stirling and The Loch Lomond SEA LIFE Centre at Balloch.
