Explore the nature reserves and other centres in Shetland and see the vast array of bird and other wildlife that live on the many islands.

The towering cliffs at the Noss National Nature Reserve support an incredible array of nesting seabirds. Every summer, the steep rockfaces of Noss island are transformed into a teeming 'seabird city' as huge colonies of puffins, gannets, guillienots and fulmars roost and nest here. Follow the coastal paths and if you're lucky, you'll be able see porpoises offshore or spot the giant skuas as they prowl the sky further inland.

Similarly, the most northerly national nature reserve at Hermaness is a haven for seabirds such as shags, gannets, puffins and kittiwakes plus colonies of seals that lounge by the shoreline.

Catch sight of Shetland's native ponies grazing on hillsides or otters swimming in coastal waters before taking a visit to the Keen of Hamar to see a unique collection of rare plants that have adapted to survive the blasted landscape.
