Edinburgh Castle

Led by some of our most iconic castles, historic attractions throughout Scotland have experienced a record breaking year, the BBC reports.

Edinburgh Castle was Historic Scotland’s number one attraction last year with 1,314,975 visitors through the gates, 10% more than the year before. Stirling Castle came in second place with 441,924 visitors which was a 17% increase from 2011. Other historic attractions that achieved rock-star like popularity were Urquhart Castle and also Orkney’s Skara Brae, which were the third and fourth most visited sites respectively.

No doubt we will see visitor numbers continue to increase for these attractions with the upcoming release of Disney Pixar’s Brave – VisitScotland now has a dedicated Brave website that offers tourists the chance to explore our most famous Scottish historical sites through the itineraries page.

For all you castle aficionados, check out Scotland’s dedicated Castle trail next time you take a road trip out to Aberdeenshire.
