The red carpet will be rolling out in Scotland’s capital city on 17 September for the premiere of Dexter Fletcher’s tender-hearted and funny screen adaption of the phenomenally popular stage hit Sunshine on Leith, which was shot in Edinburgh earlier this year.
Featuring many of the catchy tunes written by Scottish legends The Proclaimers, including I’m on My Way and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), the film tells the moving and uplifting story of soldiers Dave and Ally who have to face civilian life, family struggles and deal with jobs and relationships after coming home from serving in Afghanistan.
Tipped as Scotland’s answer to Mamma Mia, this universally appealing contemporary musical is produced by the award-winning filmmaker Andrew Macdonald, who worked on Shallow Grave and Trainspotting amongst many other acclaimed productions, and stars Little Voice actress Jane Horrocks, veteran Glasgow actor Peter Mullan (War Horse) and Paul Brannigan (Angel’s Share). With a script by Stephen Greenhorn and a wealth of great talent behind the camera, this could potentially be one of the most successful Scottish films of recent years. Director Dexter Fletcher said:
“With Sunshine on Leith we really have something special that will put smiles on the most hardened faces. Great songs, a wonderful cast and a lot of heart will create our sunshine world.”
I’m already humming these classic tunes and wondering, who would I walk 500 miles for? What about you?
Rosie Ellison, Marketing Edinburgh Film Focus manager worked with the production team to help find scene locations and figure out the logistics of filming in Edinburgh and Leith. Filming took place across the city, from the Grassmarket and The Shore (Letter from America) to Calton Hill (Misty Blue) and Princes Street Gardens (500 Miles).
Sunshine on Leith is released in UK cinemas on 4 October.
