Last week I was fortunate enough to check out the brand new VisitScotland Information Centre (VIC) in Glasgow which recently relocated to Buchanan Street in the heart of the city centre.
Just a stone’s throw from the Glasgow Queen Street railway station, the new location is perfect – Buchanan Street is the second busiest shopping thoroughfare in the UK, second only to Oxford Street in London!
The move to the Buchanan Street location after 16 years at George Square is part of Scotland’s preparations to welcome the world in 2014 when, as well as the Commonwealth Games, the country will host the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and a year-round programme of events for the second year of Homecoming.
I was given a tour of the new premises by the helpful Fraser McSorley (Visitor Services Advisor). As Fraser showed me around, the first thing I noticed was the interactive layout with a prime focus on digital technology to help visitors plan their stay. This includes a free wi-fi zone and a tablet table – I had a quick test run on one of the tablets and they were very easy to use. The tablets have a full range of apps to help you plan your trip, you can browse websites and update your social media accounts to tell the world you’ve arrived in Scotland!
One of the other main features of the new VIC is the digital poster screens, which are an innovative approach to help deliver inspiration and travel ideas for visitors. Next to these screens is a video wall playing the brand new Year of Natural Scotland TV ads, highlighting the abundance of natural assets we have on offer throughout the country. If you’re looking to pick up a memento from your trip to Scotland, you don’t have to worry – the retail area in the VIC includes a large range of souvenirs, including merchandise for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
