Summer is flying by, and July has seen our Instagram page overflowing once again with fantastic fan pictures taken around Scotland. From action shots of Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games to breathtaking sunsets and colourful castles, we’ve loved seeing how you’re enjoying Scotland this year.
It’s been another difficult choice, but we’ve finally whittled the excellent selection to just five brilliant images for July. Read on for athletics, sea views, the Kelpies and more!
XX Commonwealth Games, Glasgow
July saw Glasgow‘s incredible Commonwealth Games kick off with an unforgettable musical whirlwind of Scottie dogs, tartan and Tunnock’s teacakes. As anyone who was lucky enough to be in the city for the Games will confirm, the atmosphere was truly electric – @iamjamieross captures all the nerves and excitement in this tense shot of athletes preparing to sprint around Hampden Park.
North Berwick, East Lothian
Fancy a paddle? @madaboutravel shared this picture of a lovely sunny Sunday in North Berwick last month, and it certainly makes us want to go for a splash. The shot was taken from Tantallon Castle, a formidable clifftop fortress overlooking the Firth of Forth. Visit the remarkable 14th century ruins to breathe in historic atmosphere and enjoy brilliant sea views, just like this one!
The Kelpies, Falkirk
We can’t get enough of the Kelpies! @mrsg1106 sent us this great picture of a canal boat drifting peacefully past the incredible 30-metre structures in the Helix. Just outside Falkirk, the brand new park is a hub of summer activity - Kelpies Experience Tour lets visitors explore these remarkable pieces of art and admire their complex engineering from the inside, while the Helix offers great outdoor activities including cycling, walking and watersports.
This wonderful shot of the Jacobite Steam Train puffing its way over the Glenfinnan Viaduct was taken by @neilcoffey last month. The great tilt shift effect here makes the train look just like a toy railway set, though it’s still recognisable as the vehicle that led a certain boy wizard to Hogwarts, of course! Find out more about the Jacobite Express and the West Highland Line in our blog about Scotland’s great rail journeys.
Glencoe, the Highlands
Scotland is full of magical landscapes, and Glencoe near Fort William ranks among the most enchanting of all. The area is a paradise for walkers and hikers, with miles of beautiful glens, rivers and waterfalls steeped in peace and tranquillity. This breathtaking picture makes it easy to imagine how the Highlands looked centuries ago: vast, sun-dappled valleys, peaceful lochs, towering mountains untouched by human activity. Congrats to @russell_davies for the great shot!
