Historic Houses Association Scotland
Discover Scotland’s real royal castles.

If you were in awe of Merida's castle in Disney•Pixar's new animation Brave, you'll enjoy experiencing the real thing across Scotland.

Scotland is dotted with ancient castles and palaces. Their thick stone walls and rugged ramparts conceal stories of romance and intrigue, violence and bloodshed. Merida had her own battles to fight in Disney•Pixar’s Brave, but she follows in the footsteps of her real Scottish ancestors who defended their families and fought for their land. No doubt Merida would have admired their courage and challenged their archery skills too.

But as generations of people come and go, Scotland’s castles have stood the test of time. They are tough and resilient, standing proud, and surviving centuries of sieges and changing monarchs. Many are cloaked in myths and legends linked to their own lairds and ladies and, of course, their very own fair maidens.

You too can uncover the secrets of real Scottish castles by visiting some of these age-old buildings that have been home to generations of noblemen and royalty.

The Historic Houses Association in Scotland represents privately-owned castles and palaces which are still real family homes; each is individual and each has its own story to tell.

Choose from fairytale castles with soaring turrets and pinnacles, like Glamis in Angus or Dunrobin in the Highlands, or mysterious castles rising from the mist, such as Drumlanrig in Dumfries & Galloway, home to relics of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Find out where King James II was killed by cannon; explore The Queen Mother’s grand childhood home or encounter a castle with its own private army.
