Merida often sets out on horseback through the wild Scottish terrain looking for adventure in Disney•Pixar’s Brave with her trusted bow and arrow never far from her grasp. Horse riding is a fun and welcoming sport that anyone, regardless of age, ability or background can have a go at.

Mucking out the stables at Craigengillan Estate, AyrshireHorse riding is a great hobby for young people to get involved in, helping confidence, teaching balance and good discipline. It’s an excellent way to make new friends - human and equine - and to get plenty of exercise in the clean fresh Scottish air in an enjoyable way.

Spending time with horses and ponies is both relaxing and exhilarating and there is a lot of pleasure to be gained from developing a bond with these amazing animals. Learning how to look after them is hard work but can be great fun too as well as instilling important values like care and responsibility.

There are lots of different ways to get involved. There are many riding schools across Scotland that offer dedicated riding lessons and courses for young people and there are lots of different groups and activities young riders can get involved in within equestrian sport. Lessons are important though if you've never ridden before as mastering the basics will make riding safer and more enjoyable. Are you a budding gymnast? You might be interested in trying vaulting, which is often likened to gymnastics on horseback.
