Discover the best of Scotland's amazing wildlife and magical places at Scotland's National Nature Reserves.

The beautiful landscapes and rare wildlife showcased in Disney•Pixar’s Brave are cherished and protected in Scotland. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get out there and experience them first-hand.

The creators of Disney•Pixar’s Brave took inspiration from all over Scotland to create the film; from its intriguing history and heritage to its magical landscapes and wildlife. To guide you through the best places to experience the kingdom of Merida and her clan, look no further than Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).

A red squirrelScotland is blessed with an abundance of scenery and wildlife; from stunning birds of prey soaring high above magnificent mountain scenery and historic ancient woodlands, to salmon leaping the falls as they battle their way upstream. SNH looks after all of Scotland’s nature on behalf of the Scottish Government and many of our protected places offer the chance to experience the kind of exciting wildlife and landscapes in Merida's story.

Why not start your experience at one of Scotland's National Nature Reserves? These special places offer great opportunities to see some of Scotland's wildlife up close in the spectacular natural landscapes where they make their home.

You can choose from over 40 National Nature Reserves and 40 National Scenic Areas which pepper the length and breadth of Scotland. The most remote is St Kilda, one of the most important bird colonies in Europe. Or head to Dumfries & Galloway to Cairnsmore of Fleet, a sanctuary for peregrine falcons.
