There are thousands of Scottish woods to explore whether it’s Highland Caledonian pinewoods, ancient Atlantic oakwoods, lowland peatbogs or historic country parks.
Scotland’s woods and forests are fantastic places to be brave, enjoy adventures and experience wildlife, whatever the season.
Take inspiration from Disney•Pixar’s Brave heroine Merida and get to grips with the wilds by building a den hideaway with the kids. There are plenty of woods to choose from too. The Woodland Trust owns 80 woods across Scotland covering 8,500 hectares, so there’s no shortage of views to see, hills to climb, heritage trees to discover and nature to enjoy. Plus all our sites are free to enter and explore.
Visiting Scotland’s woods is a great way to relax, stay healthy and escape everyday life, and as Scotland’s leading charity championing native woods and trees, we’re keen to extend this passion to you. That’s why, with the support of Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage, we’ve set up an interactive website which makes finding woods near you easy.
Visit Woods features woods owned by landowners including Woodland Trust Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Wildlife Trust and National Trust for Scotland. You can enter your postcode on the site to generate a map of woods in your area to visit.
Search from woods with features and facilities including waymarked trails, children’s play areas or local heritage. Each wood has its own page with directions on how to find it, plus information and tips from fellow wood visitors.
Once you’ve completed your forest adventure, upload your comments and photos and inspire others to brave the woods and try something new.
