From striking cliff-top ruins to grand fortresses in the countryside, it is hardly surprising that this magnificent region is known as Scotland’s ‘Castle Country’ as it is home to more than 300 wonderful castles.

Aberdeen City and Shire is also home to Scotland’s only dedicated Castle Trail which lets you explore 17 of the area’s finest castles, each with its own unique story to tell. Take a 30 minute drive from Aberdeen city centre and you can soon begin to discover the magic of these exceptional historic properties for yourself.

A few miles outside the small rural town of Banchory lies Crathes Castle, one of the most beautiful and well preserved castles in the country. A favourite with families, witness the graceful tower and take a stroll around the beautiful surrounding walled gardens.

Fans of Walt Disney must take the time to visit the marvelous pinkish Craigievar Castle, a fine example of Scottish baronial architecture that is topped with tiny turrets and is thought to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s world-famous castle.

For something a little bit different, check out the haunting ruins of Dunnottar Castle, one of the most iconic castles in the country. Another highlight is Fyvie Castle - this 800 year old fortress is said to haunted by the ghost of Dame Lilias Drummond, who has been seen walking the halls of her former home.
