Savour the taste of the Hebridean waters with excellent seasonal seafood. Sample the freshwater salmon and trout, as well as a fantastic range of shellfish from freshly caught lobsters, crabs and scallops, to mussels and oysters.
The Outer Hebrides also has a reputation for producing wonderful smoked fish. While on Lewis, try the Stornoway kipper which has been split, smoked and salted in the town for over 150 years.
It’s definitely worthwhile to visit a smokehouse such as the Hebridean Smokehouse on North Uist, or on South Uist, the Loch Duart Artisan Smokehouse. Where else can you learn the age-old process of smoking fish using traditional methods?
Beef and lamb
The Outer Hebrides have a long and proud history of rearing sheep and cattle, which roam the hillside and feed on the heather that grows there. This gives the meat a really rich flavour and makes these dishes a popular choice when eating out across the islands.
Stornoway Black Pudding
As one of the Outer Hebrides’ most famous traditional foods, the Stornoway Black Pudding has been created using the same unique recipe for over 70 years and local producers now also add their own spin to this popular delicacy. It is hoped that an application to protect the status of the black pudding will be successful which would mean that only those produced in Stornoway would be a genuine Stornoway Black Pudding.
No visit to the Hebrides would be complete without enjoying the islands’ sweet treats. Look out for luxury Scottish tablet from Barra and the melt-in-the-mouth shortbread from Stag Bakeries, available locally.
Raise a glass and quench your thirst with a pint of craft ale from the Hebridean Brewery, Stornoway or a dram from Scotland's most westerly distillery, Abhainn Dearg, in Uig.
You can also pick up excellent local produce, in particular, great seasonal fruit and vegetables at the regular farmers' market in Stornoway, Lewis and Castlebay, Barra.
