    Road Directions

    By car

From Glasgow and Edinburgh follow the signs to Stirling (A80/M9). Do not go into Stirling but follow the signs to Crianlarich/Callander. (A84)  Keep going past Callander towards Lochearnhead.   A few miles after you have gone through the village of Strathyre, (before you reach Lochearnhead), look out for a turn to your right for Kingshouse/Balquhidder.  Turn off here,  go past a red phone box on your right and Mhor 84 Motel on your left and double back under the Main road following the signs to Balquhidder village. The distance is three to four miles. You will pass the Church with Rob Roy’s Grave on your right and you will know that you have reached the Village Hall when you see a second red phone box.

Use your mobile now to let us know you are coming. 01877-384-740 or 01877-384-671 (evening). That way we know to look out for you.  Not all mobile phones work here. Vodaphone and 02 are the best.

Now DO NOT go straight on. Take the left fork of the T junction, go 100 yards and over a hump-backed stone bridge and then take a sharp right off the tarmac onto a track which is signed for  Stronvar House/Farm/ Muirlaggan and Monachyle Tuarach (or Tuarach for short) where Loch Voil Hostel is situated.

From here it is 20 minutes drive up Balquhidder Glen on the South side of the Loch (NOT the tarmac-ed North side).

Proceed for a few hundred yards on a flat road and then take the right hand fork which will have a sign to Tuarach and Muirlaggan.  Carry on along this track parallel to Loch Voil for a mile or so until you get near to Muirlaggan Farm.

Just before you reach Muirlaggan a left hand fork (signed Tuarach and West Highland Animation)  will branch off up a hill away from the Loch. Go up this and through a big gate -which you should remember to close behind you if you find it shut. Keep going along this track for several miles (take them slowly if your car is on the low side). Watch out for the signs which tell you how far you still have to go.  The track improves in its second half after the Bealach new wooden house.

After two miles  you will reach another road junction. Read the signs and take the right hand fork back down towards the Loch. Cross a cattle grid and past the sheep fanks into Monachyle Tuarach. Go down the hill and at the bottom take a sharp left hand fork through a gate to Loch Voil Hostel.  You can park your car here. Enter round the front.

If you prefer you may leave your car at the top of the hill and walk down to the hostel.

    Ceud mìle Faìlte!

    A hundred thousand welcomes!

    Public Transport Directions

Most buses come through Stirling and on up to Callander.

Stirling can be reached by bus or train from all parts of Scotland.

Study the bus timetables and look for the ‘through’ buses. These will be bound for Oban, Fort William or Killin/Crianlarich and will be able to drop you off at the request bus-stop at the KING’S HOUSE HOTEL, BALQUHIDDER ROAD END

In summer there is a direct  CITYLINK bus to Oban or Fort William from Edinburgh which will stop at the KING’S HOUSE HOTEL, BALQUHIDDER ROAD END.

Let us know by your mobile once you have arrived here so we will know when to expect you.

Once you are at the King’s House Hotel, Balquhidder you can use the local subsidised TAXI service run by Helen and George from Lochearnhead. This will bring you up the glen as far as Loch Voil Hostel.  Phone Helen or George on 01567-830-388 or 07554-195446 to book ahead.   Or try Graham on 0787- 637 5982 or 01877-384768.

You should do this BEFORE you get on the bus leaving Edinburgh as they may have other commitments.

If they don’t answer just be patient and keep trying they may be out on a run – especially around school bus times.
