    Duart Castle, proudly guards the sea cliffs of the Isle of Mull.  Brought back from ruin in 1911, the Castle treasures 800 years of history of one of Scotland’s oldest Clans, The Maclean’s and its one of the last surviving privately owned Clan Castles in Scotland.

    Visit us today and explore the turbulent past of the Clan, the battles and the love stories. Stand under and admire the stone Clan Crest or enjoy the blossoming Rowan Tree in the Castle Courtyard.  Explore the ancient Keep and ghostly Dungeons.  Browse the magnificent Banqueting Hall and quaint Edwardian State Rooms.  Walk the Battlements and lose yourself in the breathtaking view out across the Sound of Mull.

    There is more to enjoy outside the Castle including the Millennium Wood and Duart Point, a promontory which can be explored on foot.

    Finish your visit with homegrown, homemade food in the Duart Tearoom or treat a loved one with a unique gift in the “Maclean’s of Duart” Gift Shop. 

    Throughout the Summer Months, Duart Castle plays host to a number of Weddings and Events such as Outdoor Theatre, Military Re-enactments, Music, Storytelling, Scottish Pipers and Highland Dancers.

    You may also recognise Duart Castle from some Hollywood feature films such as Sean Connery’s, Entrapment (1999), "When Eight Bells Toll" (1971) with Antony Hopkins and  "I know where I'm going" (1945).

    1st April – Sunday to Thursday, 11am to 4pm.
    1st May to 18th October – Daily 10:30am to 5pm
    Castle closes 18th October. (Tearoom and Gift Shop close 11th October)

    Child - 4 to 15 yrs £2.85 per ticket

    Family - 2+2 £14.35 per booking

    These prices are for Castle Entry only. Prices are per person, unless the Family Ticket is bought which allows 2 Adults and 2 Children access to the Castle. Most Summer Events are included in this price however travel to the Castle is extra.

    Road Directions

    Duart Castle is on the Isle of Mull and is accessible via the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Lochaline to Fishnish or from Oban to Craignure. 


    Travel to Oban by Road

    From Glasgow (3hrs) - The straighter road is through Invereray and Dalmally.

    From Edinburgh (3½hrs) - Drive through Stirling, Callender and Crianlarich.

    From Perth (2¾ hrs) - Drive through Crieff and Crianlarich.

    All times are approximate. If you're taking your car on the ferry you must arrive at the ferry terminal in Oban 30 mins before departure time.

    From Ferry Terminal to the Castle

    The closest ferry terminal to the Castle is Craignure.  Duart Castle is only 3.5 miles from the ferry terminal. We operate a Coach, which meets the Oban ferry daily throughout the summer so it is not essential to take the car on the Ferry, foot passengers can come to Duart easily on a day trip from Oban, taking the Duart Coach to the Castle. 

    Parking at Duart Castle

    If you do bring your car, Duart Castle is a short 3.5 mile drive from Craignure. There is free parking at the Castle. 

    Driving on Mull

    Most roads to Mull are single track. Please take care and use the passing places to allow overtaking as well as allowing cars from the opposite direction to pass, use the passing space on the left or stop on the road opposite a passing place on the right.

    Public Transport Directions

    Getting there by railway:- From Oban Station, contact Caledonian MacBrayne to discover ferry times to Craignure on the Island of Mull. On Mull take the A849 for Iona, after 2 miles turn onto the road to Duart Castle. If you have no car then it is a 3 miles walk or buy a ticket for the Duart Coach, whose bus will bring you to Duart.

    Getting there by aeroplane:- From Glasgow Airport, take the M8 for Greenock and then onto the M898 over the Erskine Bridge, turn onto A82 for Crianlarich. At Crianlarich turn left and turn left at Tyndrum onto the A85 to Oban.In Oban contact Caledonian MacBrayne to discover ferry times toCraignure on The Island of Mull. On Mull take the A849 for Iona, after 1 and a half miles turn left onto the road for Kilpatrick, Duart is 1 and a half miles. If you have no car then it is a 3 mile walk or buy a ticket for the Duart Coach whose bus will bring you to Duart.

    Getting there by ferry:- At Craignure, the Duart Coach, meets the ferries, daily from May to October. The coach is easy to identify as it is painted with the Duart Castle logo.  The Coach then returns to the meet the subsequent ferries so Visitors can decide which return Coach they would like to take back to Craignure Ferry Terminal.

    The Coach price is extra to the Castle Admission price. 

    The ferry journey takes 40 minutes and the coach trip to the castle takes 10 minutes.
