Kildrummy Castle

Kildrummy, By Alford, Aberdeenshire, AB33 8RA

Discover the imposing 13th century stronghold of the Earls of Mar.

This impressive ruin located near Kildrummy in Aberdeenshire is one of the most complete examples of a 13th century castle in eastern Scotland.

Majestically situated in the wilds of Strathdon, Kildrummy Castle encompasses the remnants of a mighty curtain wall, four round towers, hall and chapel with three handsome lancets. Another of the castle’s impressive features is its twin-towered gatehouse which was probably commissioned by Edward I of England, the infamous ‘ Hammer of the Scots’, and built by his favourite builder Master James of St George.

Once the seat of the Earls of Mar, the castle has borne witness to numerous sieges throughout its history, playing a prominent role on the 14th century Wars of Independence and the Jacobite Rising of 1715.

Very occasionally the property has to close at short notice due to adverse weather conditions or other reasons out with our control. Please check the Historic Scotland closures page for any unexpected site closures You can also follow closure tweets from @welovehistory using #hsclosure.
