The Tenement House

Historic Buildings & Homes

The National Trust For Scotland, 145 Buccleuch Street, (north West Of Sauchiehall Street), Glasgow, G3 6QN

The Tenement House provides a rare glimpse of life in Glasgow in the early 20th century, in the form of a faithfully restored house lived in by Miss Agnes Toward for over half a century.

The Tenement House allows visitors to see what it meant to be an ‘independent woman’ in the first half of the 20th century.

Experience how ordinary folk lived, and appreciate how many of the household amenities now taken for granted were considered luxuries less than a century ago.

Authentic gas lighting recreates the atmosphere of the house, which did not have electric lighting until 1960.

An exhibition on the ground floor displays Miss Toward’s extensive personal archive and serves as a valuable time capsule.
