Tankerness

Towns & Villages

Tankerness is a small settlement situated on Deer Sound, 5 miles south east of Kirkwall, on Mainland Orkney.

Mine Howe excavations, at Toab in the south of Tankerness, is a popular attraction. This prehistoric subterranean man-made chamber was dug into a large mound. Its walls are lined with stones fitted to form an arch over the cavity and 29 steps lead to a rock floor. It is believed that the village of Toab derives its name from the Norse phrase for a place where visiting ships had to pay a toll.

Another must is the Sheila Fleet workshop, where you can pick up a beautiful piece of jewellery. Tankerness Loch to the north of the settlement is a popular destination for bird watching.  There are a number of beautiful beaches and towering cliffs along Deer Sound where, if you are lucky, you may spot dolphins and other bird and sea life.
