Farmers’ markets have become a regular feature of towns and cities across Scotland since the first market took place in Perth in the 1990s.

Once or twice a month throughout the country, farmers and producers come together to sell the the very best in fresh locally grown produce directly to the public.

Stalls burst with everything from seasonal fruit and vegetables, to meat, poultry and game. There is also seafood, such as smoked mackerel or salmon, an array of cheese and dairy products, and even artisan chocolates for the sweet-toothed customer.

Homemade jams, pickles and breads, locally brewed craft beer and traditional Scottish products including haggis, black pudding and shortbread, are just some of the other foodie delights available to buy.

Many markets also hold cookery demonstrations where producers show how best to the prepare and cook their products. They are always happy to share their expertise and the history of their local produce and business.

One of Scotland’s largest farmers’ markets is the award-winning weekly event in Edinburgh, held amid the dramatic backdrop of the city’s castle. But wherever you are in the country, from Orkney to Dumfries & Galloway, you’re never far from these wonderful foodie events.

But it’s not all about food. Some market organisers join forces with local craftspeople, with many stalls selling a selection of homemade crafts, arts and jewellery.

If you cannot make it along to a market, but don't want to miss out on a great selection of fresh local produce, stop by one of Scotland's many farm shops which can be found across the country.
