Activities & Attractions
The West Wing is an ideal bolt-hole for anyone wanting to ‘get away from it all' without being far from pubs, restaurants and local shops. Northumberland is officially England's quietest county and is the perfect place to unwind, relax, and enjoy the spectacular countryside. For walking, the Pennine Way ends just a few miles up the valley at The Border Hotel, where excellent meals and drinks can be found. St Cuthbert's Way also passes nearby on its way to the tidal Holy Island (25 minutes drive), a much treasured secret of Northumberland, where you can enjoy miles of deserted beaches ending with Lindisfarne Castle and a good pub.
The local stables at Kimmerston can provide riding for all ages on the beaches and into the Cheviot Hills. The Red Lion in Milfield (3 miles) offers the best of any good pub, with visiting Real Ales and a fine kitchen (Michelin highly recommended). Cornhill-on-Tweed (5 miles) offers an outstanding village shop and the Collingwood Arms, a refurbished boutique hotel with restaurant. Kelso (15 to 20 minutes) offers the best of a Border market town, with a good range of independent shops and the magnificent Floors Castle. The attractive villages of Ford and Etal, home to the miniature steam railway, and the charming market town of Wooler are also nearby.
