Set amidst delightful rural surroundings Ballantrae is approximately 12 miles south of Girvan and 7 miles north of the ferry port of Cairnryan. This corner of South West Ayrshire is renowned for its varied and unspoilt scenery and particularly mild climate throughout the year. The Village has historic links with the Kennedy family and retains a mausoleum for this family in the village.
A very short walk from the cottage takes you to the Foreland with the shingle beach, providing protection to breeding colonies of Little Tern and with the sandy beach beyond the small harbour. On a clear day the Mull of Kintyre, Isle of Arran and Holy Island can be seen across the water, and at times even the shores of Northern Ireland. Ailsa Craig, an island of volcanic rock home to the third largest gannetry in the UK, is clearly visible out at sea.
There are excellent golf courses in the district at Turnberry, Dailly and Girvan. There are superb routes for walking and cycling and some excellent rivers for fishing, the most notable in the area being the River Stinchar. There are also several Trout Fisheries nearby together with many prime locations for fishing from the shore.
The Galloway Forest Park, recently awarded the status of being one of only four "Dark Sky Parks" in the western world, is within easy driving distance, as is the popular holiday resort of Port Patrick and peaceful Port Logan, of TV series '2000 acres of Sky' fame.
