Homecoming Scotland 2014: Aboyne Highland Games

Sport & Leisure

Aboyne Village Green, Charlestown Road, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, AB34 5HS
Join with clansmen and women who will be heading to the north east from across the globe to the village green in the centre of Aboyne where the games have been held since 1867.

The games have been noted worldwide for being a centre of excellence for the traditional disciplines of Highland Games. Not only is Aboyne recognised for this, but also as a gathering venue for a dozen clans indigenous to the North East of Scotland.

The event is masterminded and organised by a volunteer committee of 45 dedicated locals who every year seem to be able to 'out do' the previous by featuring many unique events.

Aboyne always attracts a great turn out of heavy athletes who entertain with demonstrations of strength and skill at the shot put, weight over the bar, hammer throwing and caber tossing.

In addition we have at least 5 tug of war teams who battle it out for supremacy to great enjoyment of the crowd. Athletics play a major part in the 90 event day at Aboyne with races short and long for all ages and include the testing Fungle Hill Race.

Both young and old participate in our Piping and Dancing competitions which are greatly appreciated by the crowd. The days entertainment at Aboyne also includes at least 5 pipebands who entertain twice during the day, much to the delight of everyone present.

Some 4 years ago at the suggestion of famous north east fiddle maestro Paul Anderson, Aboyne became the first Highland Games to run an International Fiddle Competition.

There will also be a special celebratory event to mark the significance of our native athlete and founder member Donald Dinnie.
