Holmwood House

Historic Buildings & Homes

The National Trust For Scotland, 61-63 Netherlee Road, Cathcart, City Of Glasgow, G44 3YU

Holmwood House is a unique villa that has been described as the finest domestic design of the renowned Scottish architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.

The house was built in the mid-19th century for James Couper, a local businessman. Many of the rooms are richly ornamented in wood, plaster and marble. Thomson's original room decoration, based on classical world themes, is being uncovered and visitors may follow the progress of this continuing conservation work.

The attractive riverside grounds around the house can be explored and there is also a small kitchen garden, planted with a range of Victorian herbs, fruit and vegetables.
