Dedicated to contemporary art and ideas, Hospitalfield is a place to work, study, learn, visit and enjoy. Hospitalfield House, in its beautiful location overlooking the North Sea, is the house of artist and collector Patrick Allan-Fraser and his wife Elizabeth Fraser. The couple were visionary in the way in which they ran and developed the estate and supported artists through collecting their work. Allan-Fraser bought or commissioned works by artists that were part of his network and he worked closely with crafts people of Angus to create the extraordinary early arts and crafts interiors within the house. The collection and archive of papers and letters therefore tells a very particular story of an artist who became a philanthropist and who left an extraordinary legacy for the support of the arts in Scotland. The house, collections and estate were left in trust in 1890 and established, in-line with the Allan-Frasers’ bequest, as a residential art college. The constitution change in the 1920s and the house was run as a post graduate college for much of the 20th century. Today the series of nationally and internationally significant residency programmes for artists, curators and writers, continue to be accommodated within the house and use the purpose-built studios. The annual graduate programme for artists and designers just out of Scottish art schools continues the programme that has its roots in the very early 20th century in supporting new artists. The residency programme has an extensive national and international network of partnerships, including through the Interdisciplinary residency programme which attracts a broad range of cultural practitioner from designers, to choreographers and composers. The house opens to the public four times a year for several days and as well as the opportunity to see the wonderful historic interiors of the house this is a time when we are able to platform newly commissioned projects with artists. There are other talks, courses and events throughout the year. To find out more about all of our activities and our history please visit our website.
