There are lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy across Shetland, from nature reserves to beautiful gardens, a cheese company and more. Whether you fancy a few hours with the family on a wildlife cruise or want to explore the islands' history in a local museum, you’ll find great things to see and do in the region.

Shetland is the ideal location to get away from it all and enjoy some real family time this autumn.

There are plenty of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed by all the family across Shetland. Take a boat trip to marvel at the magnificent sea views and cliff scenery whilst learning about Shetland from the trained guide, or try a land based tour.

Visit Noss or Hermaness Natural Nature Reserves where the deafening racket of thousands of nesting seabirds, including guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and fulmars, is an experience to behold. You can also look to Shetland's beaches and skerries, which are natural playgrounds for an abundance of marine wildlife.

For those keen to unlock the secrets of Shetland 6,000 year old history, the answers can be found at the Shetland Museum & Archives in Lerwick. You can even bring the past back to life with a tailor-made tour.

You will be amazed to find a huge range of archaeological sites just waiting to be explored, from Iron Age brochs to Norse settlements. The Mousa broch is particularly impressive as one of the best preserved examples in the world. Go inside the massive structure and venture between the walls on a small staircase.

Art lovers should whet the appetite with a visit to the Bonhoga Gallery at Weisdale Mill. A beautifully restored mill, find a range of local and international art on show. Stop along the gallery shop, which is stocked with an ever changing array of design-led goods, cards, books and an inspiring range of handmade papers.

Use the listings to plan fun family days out in Shetland.
