Food & Drink in December

Scotland is spoiled for choice when it comes to food and drink. Throughout the autumn and winter months you can enjoy hearty soups, meat and game dishes, as well as delicious seafood.

With Christmas just around the corner, turkey is of course in season and game meats including wild duck and partridge are also widely available. Rustic seasonal vegetables including parsnips, chicory, kale and red cabbage provide the perfect accompaniment. In restaurants and hotels up and down the country you'll be sure to find seasonal menus featuring the best (and often local) produce of this time of year.

For something a little less formal, stovies are an excellent winter warming snack and can be made in a variety of ways depending on the area of Scotland you visit. This traditional dish always contain potatoes and vegetables but can be made using everything from roast beef to minced beef.

For a sweet treat that can be enjoyed at any time of day, sample traditional Scottish tablet. Made from sugar, condensed milk and butter, tablet is similar to fudge but has a slightly harder texture. It is sometimes flavoured with vanilla and nut pieces. Totally irresistible!

If you need a break from Christmas shopping, why not sample wonderful produce including Aberdeen Angus beef or venison at one of the Christmas markets across Scotland?  Edinburgh and Glasgow have excellent markets where mulled wine, hot-dogs, crepes and mouth-watering confectionary are just some of the delicacies on offer.
