The Highlands offers a superb natural larder, from fresh locally caught seafood and succulent game meats, to world-renowned whiskies and artisan cheese and delicious seasonal berries. You can discover the range of local food producers and attractions across the Highlands by sampling the finest foods in restaurants, farm shops and markets across the region.

If you enjoy seafood, you’re in for a treat in the Highlands where you can feast on the freshest locally caught white fish and shellfish. In the region’s excellent restaurants and inns you can tuck into haddock, sole, scallops, lobster, crab, langoustines, mussels and other tasty fruits of the sea.

Catches are landed daily at various fishing ports, including Mallaig and Ullapool on the west coast, Buckie on the Moray coast and Scrabster in the north, so look out for the quality local eateries that serve up seafood that’s barely been out of the sea.

When you’re in Moray you should seek out Cullen Skink on local menus. This delicious smoked haddock and potato soup is a regional delicacy and there’s nowhere better to try it than in the coastal town of Cullen itself. In August, the delicacy takes centre stage when a special competition is held to find the best exponent of the popular dish from entries across the region.

Smoked salmon is another tantalising offering that regularly features on the region’s menus. You can visit places like the Isle of Ewe Smokehouse, on the north shore of Loch Ewe, and buy the finest smoked salmon from the shop of this family-run business.

Whilst you’re in the region, don’t miss the opportunity to sample traditional staples such as porridge, especially if you come across a chef using pinhead oatmeal. Haggis with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes), the mainstay of the Burns Supper, offers a classic taste of old Highland fayre. Other great Scottish produce not to be missed include oatcakes and cheeses.

For an excellent selection of award-winning artisan cheeses, make sure to visit Connage Highland Dairy in Ardersier, Inverness where you can buy everything from Connage Gouda to Smoked Dunlop which is a traditionally smoked over whisky barrel shavings.

At the Baxters Highland Village near Fochabers in Moray you can sample and buy the delicious products of this family-run and now internationally renowned food business. Learn the Baxters story in the Great Hall and browse four speciality shops, selecting from Baxters’ wide range of quality soups, preserves, chutneys and more.

Mey Selections, in Caithness, incorporates such delicacies as the finest oatcakes, shortbread, whisky, beef and lamb from producers within a 100 mile radius of Castle and Gardens of Mey. You can also purchase this wonderful produce in shops and restaurants throughout the Highlands. For more delicious flavours, head for Ullapool Smokehouse, the small traditional smoking business in Ullapool, and pick from the wide range of luxury smoked salmon, rainbow trout and kippers.
