The Highlanders' Museum

Fort George, Inverness, Inverness Shire, IV2 7TD

The Highlanders’ Museum is situated within the Historic Scotland site, Fort George, a working army barracks just outside Inverness. The Museum tells the story of the Highland Regiments from just after the Battle of Culloden to the present day.

The Museum is located in the former Lieutenant Governors quarters, a prime position in the Fort. The Museum is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the highest possible listing of building conservation in Scotland.

The Museum is home to 20,000 artefacts, the largest collection of military artefacts outside of London. These artefacts have come from our very own Highland Regiments as well as our Allied Regiments in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The Highlanders' Museum has recently re-opened after a £2.9m Redevelopment Project.

The displays have been re-interpreted to provide a clear idea of why the Regiments existed, what they did, and their connection and importance to the communities of the Highlands and Islands. In addition new building services have been installed to ensure this nationally important collection that is housed here is cared for in the best conservation conditions possible. The Museum is now also fully accessible with the introduction of new mobility systems including a stair lift and stair climber. Thanks to the Redevelopment Project the Museum also has a new dedicated education space.

The Project delivers a unique attraction in the Highlands; it truly is the Highland Military Heritage Centre: “The Heritage of Heroes”.
