Stornoway

Towns & Villages

Stornoway is the main town on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

Originally a Viking settlement, Stornoway is now a transport hub. You’ll find many hotels, B&Bs and pubs to cater for visitors arriving on the ferry from Ullapool or flying in from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness.

The town has a bustling harbour, while attractions include the An Lanntair Art Gallery, Lewis Loom Centre and the Museum nan Eilean. Lews Castle is a magnificent 19th century construction and houses a Woodland Centre in the gardens.

A range of local specialist shops sell handcrafted goods from the Outer Hebrides including jewellery and Harris Tweed.

Stornoway is also home to a good variety of eating establishments, including the stylish Solas Restaurant, found within the Caberfeidh Hotel, and the Digby Chick restaurant which specialises in fresh seafood.

Be sure to try the local speciality - the renowned Stornoway black pudding (and white pudding and fruit pudding too).
