With riding schools across the length and breadth of the country, it’s easy to arrange a horseback experience when in Scotland. There are a number of large equestrian centres where you can get lessons, trail rides or take advantage of equestrian service or even watch equine events, like show jumping. Other smaller stables will be able to provide lessons in paddocks or lead you on pony treks, or hacks for the more experienced rider.

In Dumfries & Galloway, discover Barend Riding School where you can choose from a range of native ponies and cobs to ride before enjoying treks and hacks through some of the region’s most scenic countryside.

Try riding in the pastoral Scottish Borders, where horses play an important part in the history of the area, at the likes of the long-established Ian Stark Equestrian Centre, formerly the Dryden Riding Centre, in Selkirk.

Why not include some lessons as part of an island adventure? At the Cairnhouse Stables on the Isle of Arran, enjoy treks across the island’s private farm tracks, hills and sandy beaches. In the Outer Hebrides, visit the Uist Community Riding School, a community-run enterprise, on the Isle of Benbecula and try a range of experiences in the saddle in idyllic surroundings.

At the Scottish Equestrian Hotel in Lanark, discover one of the largest riding holiday centres in the UK where almost every kind of equine service imaginable is on offer; there are holidays for groups, adults and children, riding lessons, training and exams, treks and riding events to watch. As the name suggests, there's accommodation as well as a licensed bistro, ideal if you’ve worked up an appetite after a ride. To the west of Glasgow, you'll find state-of-the-art facilities for every level of rider at Ingliston Country Club, which was previously voted the best equestrian venue in the UK.

You’ll also find that some of the country’s top hotels, such as world-famous Gleneagles or family- friendly Crieff Hydro, both in Perthshire, have excellent equestrian centres, ideal for lessons and treks for both hotel guests and day visitors. At Gleneagles, why not opt for an own a pony experience or get an introduction to polo?
