Mountain Bike Rider magazine has said that Skye boasts the best singletrack trail in Britain - the Sligachan. In fact, there are mountain biking trails and centres to be reckoned with across Scotland, from the Outer Hebrides to the Scottish Borders.

Mountain biking on Skye

The tricky Sliglachan route is very similar to that taken by street trail professional Danny MackAskill in his film Riding The Ridge, which was shot on his home island of Skye. It’s a twisting and demanding trail with magnificent views of the famous Cuillin mountain range.

Another amazing singletrack trail can be found among The Quiraing, a range of ancient rock formations on the Trotternish Peninsula. Easier options include Bealach Brittle, which starts at the spectacular Fairy Pools in Glen Brittle and offers great views of the Cuillins. These routes are not solely mountain biking trails and are great for walkers too.

The rest of the Highlands provide endless opportunities for mountain bikers; from the activity hub of Fort William, which regularly hosts the Mountain Bike World Cup, to the Great Glen and the Kyle of Sutherland.

Trails in the Outer Hebrides

The Outer Hebrides has no shortage of excellent mountain biking options, including the Isle of Harris which has some great trail sections and quiet roads ideal for biking. Enjoy the Loch Ladasdail Circuit, heading up alongside the loch and also along the shores of the epic Loch Seaforth. Venture among the mountains of North Harris and experience the thrill of the descent into Glen Meavaig.

Tracks in the south of Scotland

In the Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway, the 7stanes centres provide an impressive range of world-class mountain biking trails. Take on the challenge as you ascent and descend through diverse landscapes, from forests and woodlands to quiet moors and rolling hills.

Dundee and Angus mountain bike routes

Trails in the east of Scotland near the city of Dundee and around Angus are true hidden gems. The lower section of the Law Loop in Dundee provides an excellent starting point for those who are just beginning and adventurous foray into mountain biking, whilst the medieval pathway of the Capel Mounth trail in Glen Doll offers a challenging climb and exhilarating descent.
