The temperate weather in Scotland is perfect for windsurfing and there are plenty opportunities to enjoy this exciting sport both inland and down by the coast.

While spectacular jumps, riding big waves and sometimes reaching speeds of over 45 knots can be impressive, it is actually a sport that can be enjoyed by all the family and makes for a great active day out on the water. It is an ideal adventure sport for beginners who are keen to try something different.

The prevailing and stronger south westerly winds which blow over the west coast mean that the Isle of Tiree, Islay and the area around the Kintyre peninsula are among the best places to windsurf in Europe.

Every year, the beautiful Inner Hebridean island of Tiree plays host to the Tiree Wave Classic, one of the most prestigious windsurfing events on the British calendar for over 25 years. Admire the talent of some of the best windsurfers from around the world as they demonstrate their skill amid the crashing waves.

In Ayrshire, the Isle of Cumbrae is home to Scotland’s premier watersports centre. Windsurfing is just one of sports that can be enjoyed in the calm waters that surround the island.

Away from coast, head inland and enjoy a variety of windsurfing opportunities at locations including Loch Ken in Dumfries & Galloway, Loch Morlich near Aviemore or the loch at James Hamilton Hermitage Park in East Kilbride.

Across Scotland there are around sixteen Royal Yacht Association (RYA) recognised school, many of which offer windsurfing classes and guidance.
