The impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor, Merida inadvertently ends up on a magical adventure through the striking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, where she encounters witchcraft and mythical creatures amongst other scary goings-on.
With a love for the outdoors, Merida is a free spirit who doesn’t want to be burdened with the royal responsibilities her mother keeps trying to foist upon here. After the tempestuous teen finds out she is to be wed in a marriage designed to keep the precarious peace among the kingdom’s bickering clans, she decides to buck tradition, causing chaos. Faced with the wrath of the lords of the kingdom, our heroine turns to a quirky witch in the ensuing chaos and is granted an ill-fated wish.
Now, the only way Merida can free herself from fate is by discovering the true meaning of bravery.
Capturing the unique spirit and soul of Scotland, Brave is Disney•Pixar’s 13th full-length feature. The grandest project the world-renowned California animation studio has ever undertaken, Merida’s adventure sets new technical benchmarks while recreating the captivating climes of Scotland.
It's no suprise the film garnered critical acclaim from early reviews. Writing for STV, critic Michael MacLennan was suitably thrilled by Pixar's latest work. "It's a brilliant and breathtaking feast for the senses - and makes the most of a fairytale Scotland," he wrote. "It is without doubt the most visually stunning film seen to date, pushing boundaries in terms of what can be achieved. The windswept scenery is about a strong an advert for visiting Scotland as tourism bosses could ever hope for."
Disney•Pixar’s Brave won an Ocsar and a BAFTA for Best Animation in February 2013. It was also awarded a Golden Globe earlier in the year.
