James Bond & Skyfall locations in Scotland

James Bond’s connection to Scotland is as iconic as his gadgets and suaveness. In Skyfall (2012), starring Daniel Craig, 007 returns to his roots, with key scenes set at his family home, Skyfall Lodge, in the dramatic landscape of Glen Coe. Discover more of Scotland’s stunning filming locations from the film.

Follow in the footsteps of James Bond in Scotland

From breathtaking Highland glens to dramatic island castles, Scotland has played a starring role in the world of James Bond. Whether you’re tracing 007’s cinematic adventures or exploring the real-life Scottish influences behind Ian Fleming’s famous spy, these locations offer a perfect blend of film history, scenery, and intrigue.

Glen Coe and nearby Glen Etive provided some of the most memorable scenery in Skyfall (2012). In a driving sequence filmed in the Highlands on the A82 near the striking peaks of Buachaille Etive Mòr (pictured) and Buachaille Etive Beag, the secret agent's iconic Aston Martin DB5 manages to get upstaged by the stunning atmospheric scenery. The Scottish setting continues to play a leading role in the exhilarating events which follow.

Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle

Few Scottish landmarks are as instantly recognisable as Eilean Donan Castle. In The World Is Not Enough (1999), the castle appears as the Scottish headquarters of MI6. The film's producers fully embraced the Scottish connection, with Q (Desmond Llewelyn) giving Bond (Pierce Brosnan) a demonstration of bagpipes that double as a machine gun. Edinburgh-born Shirley Manson, the lead singer of Garbage, also performed the theme song The World Is Not Enough.

Set against the meeting point of three sea lochs, Eilean Donan remains one of Scotland’s most photographed and cinematic locations.

Duart Castle

Duart Castle

While Duart Castle never appeared directly in a Bond film, it has a fascinating connection to the origins of the character. The castle is the ancestral seat of Clan Maclean, linked to wartime hero Fitzroy Maclean. Fleming is widely believed to have drawn inspiration from Maclean’s intelligence work, daring missions, and sophisticated character when shaping James Bond.

Gare Loch

Gare Loch appears in the The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), where Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde, located on the eastern shore of the Loch, is the setting of a key moment in the movie. In one of the few occasions he is seen wearing full navy uniform, Commander Bond (Roger Moore) discovers that the loss of British submarines is no accident, but a sinister plot by the evil Stromberg (Curd Jurgens).

Loch Craignish

From Russia With Love (1963) saw Bond (Sean Connery) and beautiful Russian agent Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianchi) being pursued by sinister SPECTRE agents in a speed boat in Turkey. What most viewers are unaware of is that, due to filming difficulties, the final boat chase scene was shot on Loch Craignish, near Crinan, Argyll.

James Bond’s Scottish heritage

“

Did you know? Ian Fleming's family owned a lodge in Glen Etive, which is located next to Glen Coe.

It's no accident that Bond's family estate is located in Glen Coe. Ian Fleming, James Bond's creator, was reportedly so impressed by Sean Connery's portrayal of his most famous character in Dr. No (1962) that he gave Bond some Scottish heritage.

In the novel You Only Live Twice Fleming reveals that, as a boy, 007 attended Fettes College – a private school in Edinburgh – whilst the iconic setting for Bond's family estate in Skyfall is drawn directly from On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) - the film in which Bond reveals that his father is originally from Glencoe.

Scotland’s dramatic landscapes, historic castles, and wartime connections also make it a natural fit for the world of James Bond. From the rugged Highlands of Skyfall to the real-life inspirations behind Ian Fleming’s legendary spy, these locations continue to captivate Bond fans from around the world.
