A guide beside a traditional copper still in the distilling hall at the Isle of Arran Distillery
Whisky barrels at the Isle of Arran Distillery at Lochranza, Arran
As Scotland’s national drink, whisky is well-known throughout the world and one of the best ways to experience it is to take a behind the scenes tour at Ayrshire & Arran's only whisky distillery and visitor centre.
Whisky plays an important role on Arran, and the island's distillery at Lochranza is actually the first legal distillery on the island in over 150 years. Discover the rich character of Arran's single malts, as well as a range of cask bottles and blended malts. The visitor centre and guided tours give an excellent insight into the whisky-making process and look out for the impressive 30ft waterfall round which the centre is built.
Back on the mainland, whisky connoisseurs and novices alike can immerse themselves in AD Rattray's Whisky Experience in Kirkoswald. It features an excellent selection of the finest and rarest single malt Scotch whiskies.
Ayrshire is also home to the Girvan and Ailsa Bay distilleries which produces the well known Grant's Scotch whisky.
