With no fewer than 20 distilleries across the Highlands, whisky plays a key role in Scotland's food and drink. Explore distilleries and sample the region's distintive malts and blends, and follow the world-famous Malt Whisky Trail.

Get behind the scenes and sample a dram or two at one of the many Highland distilleries found throughout the region, from Dalwhinnie Distillery in Inverness-shire to Talisker Distillery on the Isle of Skye.

The Malt Whisky Trail, the only trail of its kind in the world, covers several Speyside distilleries. Follow the trail to discover the unique flavours of these world-famous whiskies, including Glenlivet in Ballindalloch and Strathisla in Keith, where you can learn about the whisky production processes and sample a dram at the end of your tour.

The Malt Whisky Trail also features the fascinating Speyside Cooperage, where you'll find the coopers hard at work, making whisky casks using traditional methods and tools.

Outwith the Malt Whisky Trail, head north to Caithness and take a tour of the Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick, whose single malt, Old Pulteney, has won a number of awards including World Whisky of the Year in the 2012 Whisky Bible.

The Whisky Castle in Tomintoul stocks a vast number of single malts, and whisky has been sold on the premises for more than a century. Meanwhile, the Whisky Shop in Dufftown has more than 600 single malts and offers whisky tasting.
