Hartfield House Hostel

Hartfield Road, Applecross, Highland, IV54 8ND

Welcome to Hartfield House hostel, overlooking the sandy Applecross bay and framed by mountains. There is no better place to explore. Bike, walk, climb, kayak, run, the choice is yours.

The Applecross peninsula is a breathtakingly beautiful and dramatic landscape.  The main township of Applecross (or A'Chomraich, meaning sanctuary in Gaelic) is located around the picturesque bay and enjoys uninterrupted views out over the island of Raasay and the Cuillin hills of Skye.  Applecross is reached by one of the highest routes in the UK, the Bealach na Ba; on a good day you can see the islands of the Outer Hebrides.

Hartfield House is approximately 3/4 of a mile off the main road, which skirts the bay and stands at the foot of the glen following the line of the Applecross river. Originally the old hunting lodge on the Applecross Estate, it is a large old building set in its own grounds and sleeps 50 in a mix of twin and triple bedrooms. There are ample hot showers, restful common areas, a dining hall, drying room, laundry, covered area for bikes, kit store, free wi-fi, small shop, large garden and function hall. Shops and restaurants are 15 – 20 minute walk or five minutes in the car.

With the sheltered waters of the sound and spectacular mountains right on the doorstep, Hartfield House is an ideal place to base yourself for walking and trekking, cycling, mountain biking, kayaking and climbing. The area’s cultural and religious heritage offers excellent sites of historic and archaeological interest, including an Iron Age roundhouse, 2,000 year old broch and hut circles. Applecross boasts geology to rival that of the Grand Canyon and a wealth of plant and wildlife, regular sightings of otters, sea and golden eagles. Further afield are the Torridon mountains and the beautiful islands of Skye and Raasay, as well as whale and dolphin watching. The list is endless.

Award winning establishment, The Applecross Inn offers a fantastic atmosphere and excellent seafood. The Applecross Outside Inn offers takeaway fish & chips on the waterfront, along with Applecross Ices (homemade ice cream) and good coffee. The Potting Shed is located within the glorious Walled Garden, part of the Applecross Estate grounds. It provides excellent food amongst the flowers! Lying approximately 80 miles/2 hours’ drive from Inverness, Applecross offers a fantastic location for those wishing to get away from things. There are trains running from Inverness to nearby Strathcarron and arrangements can be made for pick up, should you be travelling by train.

    Road Directions

    From Inverness

Take the A835 through Contin and Garve. About a mile further, take a left turn onto the A832 to Achnasheen. At the roundabout, take the first left onto the A890/896 to Lochcarron.

Continue straight through Lochcarron, following the signposts for Applecross. Continue for approximately 5 miles, through Kishorn, until you reach a junction which is signposted Applecross. This is the Bealach na Ba. Take this route over the hill into Applecross. It is outstanding as a journey and the views at the top are outstanding. This is one of the highest routes in the UK and therefore is prone to ice and snow in winter. The Highland Council does an amazing job in keeping the road open but should poor weather conditions dictate, you should carry straight on at the junction and reach Applecross via the coast road.

Once over the Bealach na Ba, you will come to a junction at sea level. To the left is the main hub of Applecross, where you will find the Applecross Inn. Turn right at this junction, following the road around the bay. Pass the white gates of the estate house and continue over the bridge at the river on the far side of the bay. Shortly after there will be a right turn down a track, signposted Hartfield House. Take this and follow the road for approximately one mile. You will see a large white hunting lodge set back in the glen. This is Hartfield House.

    From Fort William

Take the A82 to Skye and Kyle of Lochalsh. After approximately 30 miles you will come to a junction. Turn left onto the A87, again to Kyle of Lochalsh and Skye.Just before reaching Kyle, take the right had turn at the junction signposted, A890 to Strathcarron and Lochcarron. Remain on this road for some time, running through Strathcarron and over the railway bridge until you reach a junction. Take the  left turn onto the A896 to Lochcarron. Follow directions above from Lochcarron onwards.
