Auld Alliance Restaurant

A new restaurant with a familiar name will open in Kirkcudbright tomorrow. The Auld Alliance on St Cuthbert Street is being run by Will Gill who has been a chef at the town's Selkirk Arms for almost a decade. He's bringing back the name of a former restaurant in the town but has also chosen it in tribute to the long running links between Scotland and France. And that partnership will also be reflected in the food on offer at the eatery which is on the site of the old Kirkpatrick's restaurant. Will said: It will be Scottish cuisine but it will be given a twist of France it could be a cooking method or an ingredient that's not local. I'll be continuing in what Tom Kirkpatrick did and I will be using purely local ingredients. It means I can name my suppliers. Ballards are doing the meat, the venison burgers will come from Scott Carson in Dalbeattie and the lady at Glen Urr Ice Cream is making two kinds especially for myself. The menu will be quite small but it will also be quite unique. It'll be kept down to five starters, four mains and a grill menu but it will be changing every six or seven weeks.
