With over 800 islands, beautiful sea lochs and white water rivers, Scotland is one of the best locations in the world for canoeing. Whether you prefer a solitary paddle or canoeing with friends or family, there are plenty opportunities to take to the water.

It is an ideal way to explore Scotland’s stunning scenery and discover amazing wildlife as you paddle along at your own pace. Many activity centres across the country offer canoeing trips for all ages and abilities. You can choose from a few hours paddling in the water, or extend this to multi-day trips to remote lochs where you will discover Scotland’s true wilderness.

Elie Watersports in Fife gives beginners an excellent chance to get to grips with canoeing on the calm waters of the sheltered bay. The more experienced canoeist can venture further out from the bay for more of a challenge.

Over on the west coast, explore the beautiful Outer Hebrides by canoe and enjoy a guided canoe tour from companies including Harris Outdoor Adventure. Other popular locations which are ideal for canoeing include the rivers Tay and Spey, as well as Loch Lomond and Loch Earn. Loch Morlich Watersports near Aviemore also offers a range of courses in canoeing and several other watersports.

The Great Glen Canoe Trail which is the first of its kind in Scotland, is a 60 mile stretch of the Caledonian Canal running from Fort William to Inverness and should not be missed. For more information, download the trail map.

There are also a range of caneoing courses available via the Scottish Canoe Association.
