The Highlands is a region bursting with stunning landscapes and fantastic attractions which provide the perfect opportunity for a great family day out. Whether you’re looking for wildlife, history or the chance to enjoy the great outdoors, you’re really spoilt for choice.

Although the animals may not all be native to Scotland, the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie is a great attraction where you’ll find an eclectic range of species, from red pandas, polar bears and tigers, to red deer and Scottish wildcats.

While in the area, stop off at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore for an insight into what life was like for people who used to work the land. It’s a free attraction and well worth a visit.

No visit to the Highlands would be complete without visting the Landmark Forest Adventure Park in Carrbridge. This hugely popular 30-acre site features everything from a fun treetop trail to the region's only rollercoaster.

You can try your hand at spotting the Highland’s resident monster Nessie at Loch Ness or head east of Inverness to the fascinating interactive visitor centre at Culloden Moor which charts the last battle fought on British soil.

If you’re looking to spot wildlife, the Highlands provides lots of great opportunities. During the summer months, the Island of Handa Nature Reserve comes alive with nearly 100,000 seabirds gathering to breed. It’s an impressive site as they settle on the dramatic sea cliffs.

Over on the west coast, why not enjoy one the world’s great railway journeys aboard the Jacobite Steam Train which crosses the grand viaduct made famous by the Harry Potter films? From the viaduct, admire the stunning views to the Glenfinnan Monument and across Loch Shiel.

The Highlands is also home to several iconic castles, from Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, Brodie Castle in Forres, Urquhart Castle at Drumnadrochit and the fairytale Dunrobin Castle near Golspie. Each has its own fascinating story to tell and provides hours of fun and intrigue for visitors of all ages.

Wherever you are in the Highlands, you’re never far from inspirational attractions which can be enjoyed by the whole family. Browse the listings for more ideas for great family days out in the Highlands.
