The Katie Morag Storybook

Coll, Inner Hebrides

The Katie Morag stories by Mairi Hedderwick are included as part of the National Curriculum for Geography, in schools throughout Britain. The story of Katie and her grandmother is set on the fictional Island of Struay, believed to be based on the real-life Hebridean island of Coll.

There are sailings to Coll from the port of Oban. The main settlement is Arinagour: with its village shop, petrol pump, a hotel and other visitor accommodation, it is easy to see this as Katie Morag's village. There is also a stone pier where the villagers, keep their boats, and the ferry pier is at the mouth of Loch Eatharna.

The island's highest hill is Ben Hogh, which rises to 104m and is well worth walking, as the views over Tiree and Mull are spectacular.

There are several small islands around the Inner Hebrides and information on these islands can be obtained from the local tourist offices in the area.
