John Buchan

Buchan (1875 - 1940) was born in Perth, son of a minister. For most of his life, he managed to juggle a number of different careers simultaneously including author, journalist, member of Parliament, publisher, intelligence agent and director of Reuters...

He also enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic career which culminated in his appointment to the post of Governor General of Canada as Baron Tweedsmuir. As a writer, his output was prodigious, producing over 30 novels, seven short story collections and over 100 non-fiction works. He is best remembered for his adventure novels such as The 39 Steps and his historical biographies of Montrose, Scott and Cromwell, amongst others.
