His political career saw him act as Liberal MP for North West Lanarkshire, be voted the first president of the Scottish Labour Party and, subsequently, occupy the same position for the newly formed Scottish National Party. He travelled extensively and his experiences provided material for a large number of travel books. However, his fame as a writer is based more upon his flamboyant and highly individualistic collections of short stories and essays. He died in Argentina where he had for many years ranched cattle.
