Galloway (1956-) was born in Saltcoats in Ayrshire and her much-acclaimed first novel, The Trick Is To Keep Breathing, was published in 1989 while she worked as an English teacher.
The grim but compelling tale of alienation on a Glasgow housing scheme won the MIND Book of the Year/The Allen Lane Award and a Scottish Arts Council Book Award. It was also shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award, the Irish Times/Aer Lingus International Fiction Prize and was adapted for the stage. The accolades continued with her next two novels, including Foreign Parts, about two women's freindship, and two short-story collections and in 2002, she expanded her repertoire by collaborating with the composer Sally Beamish on an opera libretto, Monster, based on the life of Mary Shelley.
